Portrait of Union Army nurse Major Belle Reynolds

A vintage sepia-toned photograph of Union Army nurse Major Belle Reynolds standing beside an ornate chair. She is dressed in a mid-19th-century gown with multiple layers of ruffles and large bows. The dress has a fitted bodice, a full skirt, and pagoda sleeves. Her hair is styled in a center-parted manner typical of the era, and she appears to be wearing a choker necklace. Her expression is serious, as was common in portraits of this time due to long exposure times. The photograph shows signs of age with slight fading and a few marks.

Portrait of Union Army nurse Major Belle Reynolds, taken in 1862 during the U.S. Civil War.

Belle was described as “tall, handsome, and vivacious.” She survived the war and practiced medicine for many years after. She passed away in 1937 at the age of 96.
