Miep Gies met a man named Jan while they were working together at a textile company in the Netherlands. She was a typist, he an accountant. They were friends first, but after spending many nights together listening to Mozart and going to the cinema the two started to settle into a relationship. On July 16th, 1941, they married.
Not long after their wedding, they were asked to hide Anne Frank and her family. Miep’s reply to the request was “of course.”
Reflecting back, Miep said, “I don’t want to be considered a hero…. Imagine [if] young people would grow up with the feeling that you have to be a hero to do your human duty. I am afraid nobody would ever help other people, because who is a hero? I was not. I was just an ordinary housewife and secretary.”
